Credential. A SecurityTrails API key, sent in an all-caps APIKEY header.
Monthly usage
curl https://api.securitytrails.com/v1/account/usage \ -H "APIKEY: $SECURITYTRAILS_API_KEY"
{ "current_monthly_usage": 1240, "allowed_monthly_usage": 2500 }Trimmed to the fields Argus reads. Values are examples.
Gotchas
- Over quota returns 429 unless you've turned on auto-billing for overage.
- GET /v1/ping is a free key check.
How SecurityTrails charges
Subscription tiers with a monthly API-query allowance; over-quota returns 429 unless auto-billing overage is enabled. Prices third-party-reported (unverified); overage rate unpublished.
| Plan | Monthly price |
|---|---|
| Free | $0 |
| Professional | $500 |
| Business | $1500 |
| Enterprise | Contact sales |
At zero. Over-quota → 429. Opt-in auto-billing meters overage before the quota is hit.
- requests per second, per key. Account/plan-specific rps; exact value unpublished.
Or let Argus track it
Paste the key once. Argus keeps the ledger, and your coding agent reads it through the MCP server.
- Reads the SecurityTrails balance every hour and keeps the series, so you get burn per day (top-ups never count as negative spend) and days until it hits zero.
- Tracks the plan: the allowance, what's used this period, the reset date, and when you cross into overage.
- With the SDK, counts each call and every 429 against the plan's allowance, since there's no meter to read.
- Emails you on low balance, days to zero, a spend spike, or projected overage.
- Hands all of it to your coding agent over MCP, so it can ask what a run cost or how much runway is left without leaving the editor.

- Does SecurityTrails have an API for its balance?
- Yes. GET https://api.securitytrails.com/v1/account/usage returns current_monthly_usage and allowed_monthly_usage. These count queries, not dollars.
- Can I get SecurityTrails spend per day from the API?
- Not as a series. Derive it from how much the balance drops each day, ignoring top-ups.
- What happens when SecurityTrails credits run out?
- Over-quota → 429. Opt-in auto-billing meters overage before the quota is hit.
- What key does Argus need for SecurityTrails?
- A SecurityTrails API key, sent in an all-caps APIKEY header.
