How to get your Google Places API usage, balance and spend programmatically

There's no Maps-native balance or usage endpoint for Places. It's postpaid to Google Cloud Billing: request counts are in Cloud Monitoring and cost is in the Cloud Billing export to BigQuery.

No billing API, so measure from your side

Argus prices each Places call from the SKU the SDK records, using Google's per-1,000 rates and per-SKU free caps.

Credential. A Google Maps Platform API key with the Places API (New) enabled. Argus validates it with a Place Details lookup that stays in the free tier.

Gotchas

  • Your X-Goog-FieldMask decides the SKU. One extra field can move a call from Essentials to Pro pricing.
  • Free monthly calls are per SKU (Essentials 10,000, Pro 5,000, Enterprise 1,000) and don't pool.
  • There's no prepaid balance to run out. Guard spend with Cloud Billing budgets.

How Google Places charges

Pay-as-you-go per SKU (per 1k calls), tiered Essentials/Pro/Enterprise by field richness. Per-SKU monthly free calls (no pooling); postpaid to Google Cloud, no balance endpoint.

Free allowance. 10,000 a month. Per-SKU free calls: Essentials 10k, Pro 5k, Enterprise 1k — each independent, no pooling.

At zero. Postpaid to Google Cloud Billing — no prepaid balance to exhaust. Per-SKU monthly free calls (Essentials 10k / Pro 5k / Enterprise 1k) do not pool. Guard spend with Cloud Billing Budgets.

  • 600 requests per minute, per org. Per-method quota, adjustable in Cloud Console → Quotas.

Or let Argus track it

Paste the key once. Argus keeps the ledger, and your coding agent reads it through the MCP server.

  • With the SDK, itemizes each call by endpoint and prices it at Google Places's per-operation rates.
  • Emails you on low balance, days to zero, a spend spike, or projected overage.
  • Hands all of it to your coding agent over MCP, so it can ask what a run cost or how much runway is left without leaving the editor.
