Argus vs provider billing dashboards
OpenAI, Anthropic and OpenRouter consoles are authoritative and free. Where they're enough, and where checking ten of them stops working.
Each provider's own console is the authoritative record for that provider, it's free, and OpenAI, Anthropic and OpenRouter can all cap spend, which Argus can't. What a console can't do is show you twelve providers at once, give you runway on a balance it doesn't expose over its API, or answer your coding agent. Use the consoles for limits; use Argus for the view across them.
Side by side
| Provider consoles | Argus | |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | Authoritative for their own provider | Polled from the same APIs; flags drift |
| Coverage | One provider each | 28 connectors plus any API via ingest |
| Blocking spend | OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter can cap | No. Alerts only |
| Balance and runway | Balance on the billing page | Days to zero where a balance is readable |
| Per-call cost | Usage logs, per provider | Itemized per call via SDK, across providers |
| Rate-limit headroom | Not shown | From response headers |
| Coding agent access | No | MCP server |
| Cost | Free | Free to $1,000 tracked, then $39 and $149 a month |
Where the consoles are better
- They're the source of truth. Argus reads the same endpoints; when they disagree, the provider wins and Argus shows the drift.
- Hard limits. OpenAI can reject requests past a project spend limit. Argus can only tell you.
- Detail on their own product: per-key usage logs, per-model dashboards, invoices and receipts.
Where Argus is better
- One view. The week Argus started, three of our own meters were dry at once: OpenRouter, Firecrawl and Tavily. Each console showed it; none of us were looking at all three.
- Runway, not just a balance. A balance needs a burn rate to mean anything.
- The long tail. Apollo, Hunter, Firecrawl and Bright Data consoles have no spend alerts worth the name.
- Your agent can see it. A console is a page for a person; MCP lets the agent that's spending check its own cost.
Use both
Set hard limits in every console that supports them. Then let Argus watch everything at once, and alert on runway before a limit is the thing that stops you.
Questions
- Do I need a tool if I only use OpenAI?
- Probably not. OpenAI's dashboard, spend alerts and hard spend limits cover one provider well. A cross-provider tool earns its place once you pay several metered APIs, or want your coding agent to see spend.
- Can provider dashboards stop runaway spend?
- Some can. OpenAI supports hard spend limits per org and project, Anthropic supports workspace spend limits, and OpenRouter supports a credit limit per key. Argus alerts but never blocks calls, so set those limits regardless.
